Zealong Tea Estate:
Waikato’s tea treasure: A journey to the perfect blend
More than 100,000 visitors from all over the world flock to the Waikato each year to visit, taste and experience the only commercial tea plantation in New Zealand.
Creating an entire industry around tea production here was no small feat. But after almost three decades of perseverance and innovation, Zealong has established itself as a sought-after brand in the global market, gaining attention from tea connoisseurs worldwide.

It all started with a vision and 130 tea cuttings
The story of Zealong Tea Estate began in 1996 when Vincent Chen first recognised the potential for tea cultivation in Waikato. After importing 1,500 cuttings, only 130 survived rigorous quarantine protocols, but that was enough to set his plan in action.
He purchased a medium-intensity dairy farm and with modest beginnings, converted it into a tea plantation.
Today, over 1.2 million tea plants thrive on the estate in Gordonton, standing testament to Chen’s dream of producing authentic New Zealand tea—100% certified organic, traceable, and uncompromising in quality.
The tea plants have truly set their roots in the Waikato district’s soil and have developed their own unique traits while still producing a premium-quality crop that is representative of its original cultivar.
Optimal growing conditions and a golden opportunity
The climate here with its moderate rainfall, consistent moisture, and combination of hot and cooler temperatures mirrors the conditions of the world’s most renowned tea-growing regions. Chen recognised this when he noticed a flowering camellia here all those years ago.
“Tea is a kind of camellia... maybe tea could grow here too.” (Chen)
Waikato’s nutrient-rich soil and temperate climate made the perfect growing grounds for tea plants and contribute to the unique flavour profile of Zealong’s teas. The estate produces an annual harvest of 20 tonnes.
Adding to Zealong's recipe of success is its strategic positioning within the economic golden triangle of Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga. This prime location ensures optimal exposure to local and international visitors, enhancing the potential for tourism-driven revenue, but also optimal connections for inbound and outbound shipping – an important logistical advantage.

The highest standards for the future of tea
Every detail of Zealong Tea is completely traceable, from soil to first sip, a unique claim within the tea industry.
Zealong is leading the way when it comes to responsible agricultural practices, maintaining internationally certified organic standards and adhering to the highest food safety protocols. Compared to the global tea industry which is often plagued by unethical labour practices and fair-trade concerns, Zealong is showcasing a more sustainable model for the future of tea.
The ancient art of tea making has been carefully passed down from one generation to the next, and these carefully guarded family secrets and traditions are held in high regard at Zealong, but the team have adapted the practices to ensure the growth of the unique traits within their crops.
A multifaceted destination
Zealong’s dedication to quality has not gone unnoticed; the estate has achieved numerous international awards, reflecting the excellence of its organic teas.
Beyond the tea fields stands an impressive estate destination featuring the Camellia Restaurant, luxury accommodation, event venues for corporate functions and a retail boutique and renowned tea tasting room which is open to the public.
Looking ahead
Remaining focused on growth and innovation, with plans to further expand its operations and insights, Zealong is a hotspot for tea lovers and food enthusiasts and stands as a model for the future of tea.
Chen’s vision matched with the Waikato district’s perfect climate for growing and prime logistical connections for exporting all contributed to a winning business recipe and has seen Zealong cultivate success in the region.
