Supporting Business, Driving Sustainable Growth

The Work of Takitini Waikato District Economic Development

What does economic development really mean—and why is it so important for local businesses?

For the Takitini Economic Development team at Waikato District Council, it means showing up, connecting people, creating opportunities, and being part of building a thriving local economy from the ground up.

We know that the heart of our district lies in the 11,000+ businesses that power our towns and communities. Our team works alongside business owners, entrepreneurs, sector leaders, and community champions to help unlock their full potential and ensure they have access to the resources, networks, and support they deserve.

At the core of everything we do are four strategic pillars:

•    Investment and attraction
•    Business growth and sustainability
•    Sector development
•    Workforce development

These pillars are grounded in the socio-economic priorities of Waikato 2070, helping us align daily actions with long-term strategy. They guide us as we weave together people, place, and opportunity across our unique district.

What We’ve Been Up To

With a small but passionate team, Takitini has been active across the Waikato district, bringing people together and promoting the incredible mahi of our businesses. Here are just a few recent highlights:

Business Networking at Riverlea HQ, Horotiu

In partnership with Riverlea Group and the Waikato Chamber of Commerce, we co-hosted a successful business event attended by over 70 local business leaders. It was a great evening of conversation and connection, with Mayor Jacqui Church, CEO Craig Hobbs, and MP Ryan Hamilton all in attendance.

Gordonton Business Leaders Hui

We brought together business owners from Gordonton to explore how they can collaborate to elevate the town as a boutique destination. From Zealong Tea Estate to heritage gems like Woodlands Estate, the area is brimming with untapped potential.

Huntly / Raahui Pookeka Economic Futures Workshop

Our recent event in Huntly was a standout. Co-facilitated by our Economic Development and Spatial Planning teams, the evening invited local business voices into the planning process. It was described as “inspiring” by Waikato District Council CEO Craig Hobbs and was a great example of the Takitini approach: progress through partnership.

Supporting the Construction Sector

One of our advisors attended a recent industry event to better understand the recession’s impact on the construction sector in the region. We’re working to amplify local voices in conversations around coordinated procurement and regional infrastructure investment.

Soda Inc. Women in Business Expo

Emma and Beth from our team joined 150+ wāhine at this vibrant event. It was a chance to connect, share the Takitini mission, and celebrate the power of women in business. A highlight? Hearing from Kristen Lunman and Natalie Ferguson from Powrsuit, and their empowering mantra: “What if it all goes right?”

Why It Matters

Economic development isn't just about numbers—it's about people. It’s about making sure our businesses in places like Tuakau, Huntly, Gordonton and Raglan have the same access to support as those in larger cities.

It’s about advocating for our rural and regional voices in central conversations. It’s about creating spaces where ideas are shared, partnerships are sparked, and communities grow stronger.

At Takitini, we believe in the power of connection. That’s why we’re inviting you—our business community—to join us. Come along to an event. Sign up to our newsletter. Or simply reach out to talk. As one of our mentors says: Never underestimate the power of a good conversation in business.

Whether you're scaling up, starting out, or simply looking for new ways to grow—we're here to help.
