Transforming health one micronutrient at a time

In 2013, three athletes—a cyclist, a swimmer and a sailor came together with a shared problem.

Trying to hit their daily nutritional goals and consuming enough calories was a major task and they realised that for many athletes, it was inaccessible.

They recognised the power of metabolism and micronutrients in enhancing performance, not just for elite athletes but for anyone striving for better health.

Their collective vision gave birth to Radix Nutrition, a company dedicated to simplifying access to metabolic health through high-quality, ready-to-go meals and supplements.

It’s the first company in the world to push its products’ micronutrient content to over 100, without having to fortify with added compounds.

A growing problem for a growing start-up

Initially, Radix set up shop in the Bay of Islands, but as the demand for their products grew, they needed to find a new location that would allow them to scale.

Looking first to Auckland, the commercial properties available imposed significant limitations, with only existing buildings available requiring expensive fit-outs.

It became clear that in order to thrive, they needed to find somewhere with space to future-proof the business growth.

The Waikato district was an obvious choice with its expansive greenfield opportunities, inviting them to design a facility that aligned perfectly with their forward-thinking approach.

In 2017, Radix Nutrition took a significant step, securing a 3,500 m2 lot in Northgate Business Park.

With the freedom to create a purpose-built facility, they set the groundwork for a nutrition computational-led production process that would see them raise the innovation bar higher.

A wealth of knowledge

The business park’s strategic advantage couldn’t be ignored, as it provided proximity to major ports like Auckland and Tauranga, essential for smooth distribution, with their logistical partner Mainfreight stationed just down the road.

Choosing the Waikato district also meant creating a more balanced life for their employees.

The lower cost of living in the area not only benefits the team members personally but also makes it easier to access a larger pool of talent.

Hamilton Airport announcing the return of their trans-Tasman connections is a game-changer for Waikato-based businesses in the Australian market, as it takes the drive-time pressure of short hops across the ditch to talk business.

A high-profile partnership

This new space moved beyond bricks and mortar as it opened up opportunities to connect with the growing tech industry in the Waikato, as well as some food industry giants.

A turning point arrived in 2020 when Radix Nutrition forged a technical partnership with New Zealand’s dairy powerhouse Fonterra.

This alliance brought invaluable expertise and resources to the table, especially in the high-performance market, greatly enhancing their product offerings and opening doors to partnerships with the likes of New Zealand Rugby, Tennis and High Performance New Zealand.

The collaboration reinforced Radix Nutrition’s commitment to delivering only the best nutritional supplements, with access to high-quality whey protein.

Untapped potential

Radix Nutrition's success is a testament to the untapped potential within the Waikato district offering a supportive ecosystem for businesses, fostering collaboration and nurturing innovation.

The company is looking to expand into Asia, the US and Europe as it grows into the ready-made nutritional breakfast space.

Scaling in the Waikato, a sports and outdoor-loving region with a high proportion of athletes, has presented opportunities that aligned Radix perfectly with their steps into high-performance, while enabling them to give back to their community through sponsorship of grass-roots sports programmes.
